Game 6 - Jacksonville 24, Cleveland 7

JACKSONVILLE, Florida (Sun Oct 17 16:45:04 1999) -- Relative unknown Jay Fiedler baled out the Jacksonville Jaguars and kept them atop the AFC Central Division.

Replacing injured Mark Brunell, Fiedler completed 12-of-14 passes for 113 yards and directed three scoring drives in the second half as the Jaguars survived a scare with a 24-7 victory over the winless Cleveland Browns.

Despite managing little offense against the NFL's top-ranked defense, the Browns (0-6) grabbed a 7-6 lead on Tim Couch's nine-yard touchdown pass to Terry Kirby with 12:21 left in the second quarter.

Brunell left early in the third quarter with a rib injury but the game turned late in the period when linebacker Thomas Hardy recovered Kirby's fumble at the Cleveland 25. Brunell completed 12-of-19 for 109 yards before Fiedler led the Jaguars to 18 unanswered points in the final 16 1/2 minutes.

The fifth-year pro out of Dartmouth tossed the first touchdown pass of his career, a seven-yarder to tight end Kyle Brady with 1:35 remaining in the third period to give the Jaguars the lead for good. He also hit Brady with the two-point conversion pass.

The Jaguars (5-1) marched 70 yards in 11 plays on their next possession, taking a 21-7 lead on James Stewart's two-yard TD run with 5:54 remaining. Mike Hollis tacked on a 24-yard field goal with 44 seconds remaining, his third of the game.
