Game 13 - San Diego 23, Cleveland 10
SAN DIEGO (Sun Dec 5 20:15:06 1999) -- The San Diego Chargers' six-game losing streak is over at the expense of the Cleveland Browns.
Jermaine Fazande and Kenny Bynum scored on short runs, John Carney kicked three field goals and the defense, without injured linebacker Junior Seau, took care of the rest as the Chargers posted a 23-10 victory over Cleveland.
This game had no real playoff implications, although San Diego remains mathematically alive with a 5-7 record. In 1995 the Chargers were 4-7 but won their last five games to make the playoffs. Included in that streak was a win over Cleveland.
The expansion Browns fell to 2-5 on the road and lost their third straight game overall. At 2-11, they have the NFL's worst record, a half-game behind the 2-10 New Orleans Saints.
Jim Harbaugh, who threw for a career-high 404 yards in last week's loss to the Minnesota Vikings, mostly handed off to Bynum and Fazande. Harbaugh completed 16-of-23 passes for 161 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.
Bynum carried 17 times for 60 yards and Fazande 11 for 42 as the Chargers posted their first win since a 13-10 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. That victory completed a 4-1 start. In the six losses since, San Diego allowed 23 or more points each time and scored more than 20 only once.
Seau, who has strained muscles in his abdomen, missed a start for just the fourth time in his stellar 10-year career. But his teammates limited the Browns to just 202 yards of offense.
Tim Couch was 18-of-29 for 184 yards with one touchdown and one interception for the Browns.
